Traditional tune typically played at the beginning of a chindon-ya gig. As you read the transcription (p. xvi), you can listen to this tune performed by Takada Engei Sendensha in Menuma, 2011. Note that from the beginning of the clip to 0:10 is considered “uchikomi,” a percussion introduction of sort, a sonic cue for the instrumentalists to start a new tune (see p.78, 94).
2) p. xviii Old Chindon-ya Montage
This is a montage of old chindon-ya footage, from news reels and archival images (courtesy of Hayashi Kōjirō), to give you a sense of what chindon-ya may have looked and sounded like in the past. Some footage does not have sound. See also Introduction, Item 4 for news reels on chindon-ya from the 1950s and 60s, to give you a sense of chindon-ya as experienced by my parents’ generation.
